Bratislava is the capital of the Slovak Republic and the country's largest city with a population about 429,000. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries. Bratislava is a political, cultural, and economic centre of Slovakia, the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament, and the executive branch of the government.

After World War II, Czechoslovakia field under Russian influence. After unsuccessful uprising in 1968 against communist’s regime, it finally collapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia became democratic country. After the split of Czechoslovakia Bratislava became a capital again in 1993. Slovakia joined both NATO and the EU in the spring of 2004 and introduced the Euro in 2009. Slovakia has made significant economic reforms since its separation from the Czech Republic in 1993.
